In Parallel

There’s a type of love I found,
It’s the love that shouldn’t have been,
But was
Is

And there springs an alternate timeline
Another universe side by side with your own
Fabric
Torn

And so like the ghost that only you see
Hidden to others, nobody believes you
Haunted
There

A companion always in your periphery
Nothing wrong with dependable
Silent
Grave

Reality split, worlds in restless conflict
To go back to one, loss is too great
Courage
Fear

And so I resign myself to gratitude
For love that shouldn’t have been
Struggle
Life

  1. My interpretation from a neuroscience perspective:

The portal (in the picture) = the corpus callosum

Another universe side by side with your own = two hemispheres in your brain connected by the corpus callosum.

A companion always in your periphery = “the sensed presence” — happens when the right hemispheric sense of self falls out of phase with the left hemispheric self under certain physio/environmental conditions, causing the right ‘self’ to be experienced as an external presence by the left ‘self’.

Reality split, worlds in restless conflict = Two hemispheres with two different personalities and perceptions of reality as seen in split-brain experiments.

And so I resign myself to gratitude For love that shouldn’t have been = accepting that you are not whole without the other — that the “two” of “you” are “one”.

  2. Oh for the capability to cherry pick overplapping dimensions and time-lines, knitting the ‘could have beens’ with the here and now – ‘nothing wrong with dependable’ here and now. Still, there’s more than one way to peel an orange – *nods looking sage*.

    1. I think with poems everybody’s interpretation will be different. If this poem has helped you have more ice cream that this is a worthy compliment indeed! 🙂 Thank you for reading Shell!

  3. Oh such grace. The measure of this is like an elegant fall, then a catch, catch upon maddening hooks. Please forgive me if my comment is short, I tend to swallow a poem whole and sort of hold it all together there inside, like a single experience, I’m not sure if that makes sense. But the whole of it, just like being torn. The awful, beautiful crush of it. Thank you for this. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for these meaningful words in reaction to my poem. Your praise of grace, is full of so much grace itself. You never have to apologize for a short response, because you are able to say so much in few words. Such is your gift with language. If my responses to your poem seem long in comparison it is only because I lack the skill to express myself as beautifully as you do. Thank you!

      1. Dear Swarn, I’m smiling reading your beautiful words, thank you endless. And let’s do agree not to apologize for length or brevity, yes? I enjoy your comments and thoughts in full and I’m so grateful each time we connect. I hope you are doing well and that your week is magic. 🙂

        1. Sounds like a good deal to me. 🙂 Unfortunately magic has remained in the closet this week. And my cloak on a hook. But the bunny is happily eating lettuce and promises to return to the top hat after she’s through with a short autumn vacation. 🙂
